Most well-known in recent memory as the host of the 1998 Winter Olympics, Nagano evolved as a temple town around Zenkoji, one of Japan's most popular temples. Today the capital of Nagano Prefecture is still visited for its many temples and also to venues of the former Olympic games.
You've got to get outside the Tokyo metro area to go skiing, but this mountain town in the so-called Japanese Alps has everything that downhill fiends will want, thanks to all the ski resort upgrades done before the winter Olympics back in the '90s. Even if you're not a pro, you can learn to ski here, too. The town itself is a gem, and very close to the slopes.
I saw Tono Cafe vhicle at Olympil Park. it makes me slightly happy. You should visit Zenkouji Temple. Huge gate and statue there. You had better buy tougarashi, shichimi for sueveniors. Fancy packages are beautiful and relatively reasonable.
Came on a snowboarding trip to Hakuba during February. Conditions on the mountain were perfect - huge base of natural powder and good rental options. Not a good option for budget travelers, though - Hakuba (and Japan in general) is not cheap! Accommodation and taxis in particular are quite pricey.
