Like sleeping in West Africa
I managed to get through the night by opening the windows. But because I was on the ground floor and the windows swing open in a perpendicular manner, that meant creating a wide opening that any person, snake, or other wild animal might easily come through. So I had to trade coolness for insecurity while I slept.
There are also no screens on the windows, but I had no problem with mosquitoes.
I don’t know how it is possible not to have AC in a hotel in Provence and neither did my taxi driver. He said it’s hot 6 months of the year.
Hotel Garance is closed from 12:00 to 16:00 every day, so if you arrive during that window, you’re out of luck. No checking in. I was unaware of that oddity and arrived to a locked hotel after 5 hours of cycling in 90 degree heat.
I happened to find their daughter, who kindly let me in. But I had to take the initiative to do that, and had I not, I would have been waiting 2 hours in the heat with no water.
Hotel Garance is not in the village of Bedoin, but a 2.5 mile, very steep uphill trek (if you happen to be biking). There is nothing there but the hotel, a small swimming pool, and the restaurant next door.
The rooms are basic and small with fluorescent lighting. Since the windows are shuttered against the sun/heat during the day, there is no natural light in the rooms. Think of the rooms as a small, hot, fluorescent-lit box with a bed in the middle.
I looked around for other hotels but there is not much else in the area. I assume that’s why the hotel gets good ratings—they have very little competition in Bedoin.

Cycle touring in a heat wave
a fabulous location , great storage for our bikes, delicious breakfast and lovely pool area . There was no a/c in the rooms but there was a large fan.
The hotel was marked down by the attitude of the owners who were less than gracious when we arrived slightly early , in temperatures of over 40 degrees by bike . This attitude continued during our 2 night stay.
We were cycle touring in Provence and everywhere we were treated with warmth , generosity and kindness but sadly not at La Garance.
