Modern guesthouse with great amenities and welcoming atmosphere
I selected Arc Yakushima (stylized "Årc") mainly for the location, reasonably close to Anbo and within reach of several interesting restaurants and places of interest. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it is also a very modern guesthouse with excellent amenities and on-site facilities including a fully equipped kitchen.
Arc styles itself as a "commons", with "co-residents" as opposed to a traditional hotel with guests. Nonetheless, the experience is not so different in practice. Your room only has a bed; toilets, showers and other facilities are shared, but I found them to be in excellent condition and spotlessly clean.
For those staying without a car, you will want to make ample use of the rental e-bike service, as the buses run at inconvenient times. They're fine for arrival and departure, but not when you want to head out for dinner or to pick up a quick snack. Simple meals, drinks and craft beers are available to buy at Arc.
While not unique to Arc, be aware that a jaunty tune plays at loud volume all over Yakushima at 6 o'clock in the morning, every morning. If you'd like to sleep in, bring earplugs.
I thoroughly enjoyed staying at Arc and would love to come back again. I especially want to thank Suguru-san for his kind hospitality.
