Holiday with 2 sons to experience Zagarolo, Rome, Palestrina and Tivoli

Cordial thanks to Terhi and Ivano making our 5-day holiday memorable. It was so nice to have Olive Tree Hill, next to historical Zagarolo, as our base to learn about Italian history, culture and cuisine. Ivano, a true historian, walked us through the interesting local history of the neighborhood. We learned much more about our interests having the accommodation outside of busy Rome city. Rome city already early March was too crowded for us. We visited Zagarolo town, the weekend market at Zagarolo guided by Terhi & Ivano. Wine tasting and tour at the vineyard we also highly recommend. We got lift by to fascinating Palestrina and Tivoli and had self-guided tours there. Transfer service to and from Zagarolo train station was most useful and made our movements efficient. Train to Rome city took only 35 minutes, where we spent 2,5 days walking long distances and making some well planned shopping. Last, but not least, I took Ivano's cooking class. We made eg ravioli and ragu, chicken and Mont Blanc as dessert. I learned a lot and got nice boost and further inspiration to my own cooking from Ivano - thanks a lot. I already cooked using my learnings.
Warm thanks to Terhi & Ivano

A December visit to Zagarolo

Eleven years ago I came to Italy with my 80 year old mom to celebrate the fact that she had finally decided to retire. The last stop on our European tour that year was Zagarolo. I had carefully planned tours in Rome that would take into account the fact that mom couldn't spend long days on her feet in the hot Roman summer sun. We concentrated on the major things - the Colosseum, the Vatican, the Forum. We had an amazing time, but it was just a taste of what Italy has to offer and I always swore I would return. Mom and I stayed at Olive Tree Hill in 2013 and you can find my review of that stay here on tripadvisor - either scroll through the reviews for Olive Tree HIll or go to my profile and scroll through my reviews there.
I finally returned to the Roman countryside this year and true to my allegiance I contacted Ivano and booked my stay with him again. Olive Tree HIll does not disappoint. The cottage is quiet and private, but don't expect television - because there is not one. Instead there is a peaceful setting looking over an olive grove and quiet walks on the local back roads. The water in the shower is hot and the room is clean. Every morning there is a simple beakfast of bread and meats and cheese, farm-grown jams and jellies, yogurt, granola, and cereal. After breakfast Ivano, your host, will give you a ride to the train station, make sure you have a day pass for all the transportation in Rome, show you the application with the train schedules, and make sure you have his number so you can let him know when you need to be picked up at the end of the day. Ivano is seriously well educated and informed about Rome and the surrounding countryside and offers some signature tours such as a day trip to Pompeii and a night-time walking tour of Rome. Old town Zagarolo itself has a significant and long history. My first time in Italy I did not have the opportunity to explore this lovely medieval hill town. This time around I arranged for a day-long tour with Ivano as my driver and tour guide. He took me to Zagarolo as well as to several other regional historic hill-towns. HIs knowledge and personal touch made this my favorite day of my week. I learned so much and took so many photos. I cannot speak highly enough of my second stay with Ivano and Tehri, his lovely wife.
Please understand - the beauty of Olive Tree Hill is it's rustic, Italian countryside location. It is off the beaten path and is not a 5-star resort hotel. The value in your stay is the peaceful quiet after the hot (or cold) bustle of Rome or Florence or Pompeii all day long. It is sitting with your host at the end of the day, or over breakfast, sharing the stories of your travels and gleaning tidbits of where you want to go the next day from him. Ivano wants you to have the best visit of your life to Italy. He wants you to experience not just the big landmarks, but the little ones as well (like old town Zagarolo), and the hospitality of its people. If you tell him what you want from your explorations he will do his best to make it happen.

More than a place to stay!

We first stayed here 9 years ago. We were driving through Italy and wanted a place to see Rome from without dealing with the car. This was perfect. By the time we left we felt as if Ivano & Tehri were old friends and hoped to return just to see them. This visit (without the car) was all we hoped for and more. After ticking all the "must see" sights on previous trips, Ivano managed to open new windows through which to see and enjoy Italy. History discussed over breakfast, local wine tastings organized, exploring the center of Zagarolo and meeting the people who live there, enjoying a midday beer together - it all added up to more than a stay, it was an experience. And on our last day Ivano introduced us to an amazing restaurant, and owner Guilio, that surpassed all expectations. As seasoned travelers it is rare to be surprised by genuine hospitality like this. Thanks, Ivano and Terhi, for once again extending your insights, knowledge and warm hospitality to us. We plan to return!

Like a friend's house.

On the South-North route we stayed at this property, well advised by dear friends who have frequented this b & b for years.
The house is about 10 km from the motorway exit with several petrol stations along the way.
Immersed in the greenery of the property's olive grove, peace, tranquility and security are the things that strike you immediately.
To welcome you are the owners: Ivano and Terry, two wonderful people who make you feel immediately at home, indeed, in a special house.
Our room is simple but clean, with air conditioning and everything you need to spend one or more nights.
Ivano made us a delicious dinner, I don't eat meat so he did his best to cook fish. Unfortunately we could not dine under the great mulberry because of the very bad evening but inside; a single table where to dine with the other guests and with the same owners. It was really a special experience that I Recommendation to everyone. In the morning a homemade breakfast with hot drinks, bread, jams, juices, biscuits, cake and more allowed us to resume the journey home. Attractive prices. See you next time.

Amazing stay and a new tour experience

Updating our past review to add that our family took a fantastic guided tour with Ivano this past June. We toured through the Calabria region and on up to Paestum, finishing up at their lovely bed and breakfast in Zagarolo. Ivano worked with us to develop our itinerary, focusing on the extensive Greek history in the settlement of Italy. A few of the highlights included the famous bronze statues in Reggio Calabria, the charming little town of Bova, the seaside of Cirò Marina (including a beautiful vineyard and winery tour) and Paestum, with ruins of massive temples rivaling the Acropolis and Roman Forum. Ivano is so patient, a great driver, and just fun to hang out with!
We have stayed with Ivano and Terhi six times now and plan to return next year. I can't say enough good things about their beautiful property and warm hospitality. It really feels like we have found some long-lost Italian relatives and we get to stay with them. I love visiting Rome, but this is absolutely the best way to stay. Only 30 minutes by train into the heart of Rome and no worries about parking or driving in crazy traffic. In addition to Rome, Ivano can tell you about many interesting towns nearby, including Tivoli, Castel Gandolfo, Nemi and Palestrina (and of course Zagarolo.) Rich with history and lots of hidden gems off the beaten path so you can discover the real Italy.
