This didn't happen and although there was someone in the restaurant on the ground floor, waiting for others (it turned out) to make the place ready for service, he just shouted at me through a locked (glazed )door, then ignored me.
Thankfully the other staff who turned up were kind, helping me to retrieve the key.
The room, though clean and with a nice bed, was like an oven, and the hotel was more like an unstaffed lodging house. There were WiFi codes posted on the entrance code, and a bottle of water in the room.
There was a safe, also, but no key or any other welcome information.
I was wary when I saw there was just one previous rating, markjng it a 10. Hmm, I wonder who did that?

outside of town
This hotel is very comfortable, in a good location but book your parking beforehand as there is not a lot of room. There is a great café next door and a restaurant that is a little on the expensive side attached to the hotel. The room is spacious and the staff friendly. While this place is actually not in Heidelberg proper it is an easy tram ride to the center of town. It was a large room with a large bathroom. However, they could use some soundproofing since we could hear a crying baby for an hour in the night and the man in the next room coughing.

Hotel with Nice restaurants and Bakeries around
The Bakery next door serves great breakfast and selection of the bread is outstanding.
Recommend their Almond Muffin is very good.
