Perfect remote island stay

Had a great week long stay at Tarpon Sands. Everyone that worked there is incredibly nice and provided great service. Everyone meal was delicious, hence why I came home a couple of pounds heavier, lol. Location was beautiful and will be going back.

Unpleasant week of vacation

Really poor fishing experience. Guide was awful. Also our room leaked badly during a storm so they had to move us to another room.

“Tarpon” Sands

Recently returned from a five day fishing trip to Tarpon Sands. July 2026. We booked through Yellow Dog Fly Fishing. We chose this location at their recommendation- we told them that our goal was to sight fish tarpon. We told the lodge manager the same, but expressed our willingness to switch gears to sight fishing anything if conditions required switching it up. We fished long days on the water. Admittedly challenging winds and weather at times, but still fishable with the exception of a half day of torrential rain. After five days, we did not have a single shot at a cruising tarpon. We certainly had our share of “fish rolling over there in the channel”, but not one single fish on the flats that we could cast at. Not once did the guide offer a new plan or a “hey, the tarpon arent around- lets go look for bones or permit if thats cool?” Extremely disappointing trip. Whether this was a result of the weather, the fishery itself, or our guide, i cant say. It is very clear however that our guide was primarily interested in anchoring up in the channel to blind cast and dredge for deep tarpon. We would routinely cruise the same shore line 4-5 times in a row, even though no fish were seen. The fishery felt tiny, and we didnt feel as if our suggestions to try something different were acknowledged. Very frustrating. Ultimately this trip a waste of time and money and i would highly recommend against it. The food was good at least.

From the first moment out the door at the airport until being dropped back off at the end of the stay, Tarpon Sands exceeded any possible expectation we had before arrival. The island is gorgeous, the staff attentive, kind, dedicated and efficient. The owner and owner family very gracious, the food magnificent.
