Not Your Ordinary West Coast Hostel

It took some online shopping, but the Nanaimo International Hostel continues to be one of my best finds yet. Rarely do accommodations become a highlight of budget travelling, but in Nanaimo (an island town I find to be HIGHLY underrated, by the way) there exists a homey hostel with all of the quaintness of a retrofitted bungalow, adapted for your comfort and pleasure. We rented out the ‘Garden Cottage’, which is a separate accommodation behind the house. This proved to be a wise decision. The cottage (more like beach house) is a humble, quiet space removed from the main hostel, where the ocean breeze is free to flow in from wooden-paned windows. We were told we would be sharing common spaces, though there were no other occupants in the cottage during our stay. The hostel has a lovely back property with a tent pad (for the more adventurous) and great view of the water.
Nanaimo International Hostel is located a 10 minute walk from downtown Nanaimo where many great restaurants and a beautiful waterfront are all awaiting your exploration. The owner was kind and polite in helping us get settled in, not afraid to show us around before leaving us to nap. I would have no hesitations in booking this accommodation again for my next stay in Nanaimo. Truly a gem in an underrated town.
Pros:
-Quaint accommodation next to the water
-Cottage is affordable and facilities are excellent
Cons:
-Could be closer to downtown Nanaimo

Nice motel.

The hostel is on a noisy street. However, the hostel is very clean. It has outside showers if you want to experience something new. There are, of course, also showers inside the house. Wifi is quite good. Security to the hostel is good too. The older fellow who runs the hostel, is very friendly. A very likable chap. Honest service with a 'thank you for staying here' greeting and attitude. I have stayed here at this hostel more than once and I think that it is cheaper than the HI hostel further down the road. This hostel is not as frequented as the HI hostel and I think that this makes this hostel a bit better than the other one. Clean sheets, too. Clean living room and a very relaxed atmosphere throughout. Recommended to stay here.

stayed here for a little over a month in dorm and private room

Wonderful place to stay....very clean rooms and conscientious owners with a very, family like atmosphere....owners often shared food with guests and many guests shared food with each other...many travellors come here again and again. Private rooms available in the basement extremely reasonable prices....$30 a day.....lockers in basement available too.....overall one of the very best hostels I've ever stayed in in every way....beautiful view of harbor about 10 minutes away as well as ferry to Vancouver...couldn't say enough good things about this place. excellent Indian buffet nearby...tooo

Very nice and helpful staff

I stayed at the International Hostel in Nanaimo for one night. Especially the nice staff who was really helpful and could answer all our questions about Nanaimo was great.
The hostel is very clean (especially the single bathrooms). We stayed in a four bed dorm and there was a lot of space for all of us.
If you are looking for a nice place to stay in nanaimo and you don't want to spend much money, check out this place!

Quiet, Casual, Inexpensive

Only stayed a couple nights there, but it was very peaceful and comfortable. From the back yard you can see the water, and there is a parking lots for guests as well.
If you bring a tent you can pitch it in the back for a small fee.
