A gem of a place
What an absolutely beautiful place. We stayed in the chapel set in a lovely garden opposite the beach. Lots of birds visit the garden, we even saw a kingfisher and it is lovely to hear the birdsong. Breakfast and dinners were amazing all served on the outside terrace from which you had a great view of the sunset. Sabine is a perfect host and can arrange any trips you might like to take. The village of Calhete is a 5 minute walk away but to be honest it was just nice to sit outside and look at the fishermen bringing in their catch. Thoroughly recommend this place can't wait to return.

Heavenly Palm garden on the edge of the world
The Torre Sabina is a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the distance to your every day life. On our 14-day-journey around the Cabo Verde islands the Torre was our main-stay. We spent 9 days in the neat 3-story tower with breakfast included in the - very reasonable - price.
Sabina, Walter and all staff are very friendly and helpful on all occasions. Sabina will communicate details about your stay in advance. She can organize an Aluguer/Taxi which will take you to Calheta from the airport if you wish. You can also communicate with Sabina how you want to pay for your stay (Escudos/Euro in cash upon arrival). Sabina also suggested to have the dinner at the Torre for our first night - great idea!
In Calheta and the nearby area around the Torre there aren’t many options for dinner or food shopping. You have the opportunity to buy fresh fruit and vegetables from the market women, though, who will walk by with their offerings in the mornings. For this reason we decided to stay with the dinner at Sabina’s. All food, breakfast and dinner was perfect! We have never eaten better on a holiday. Mana, the cook, ist a very lovely person and she will do all the best she can to have you a meal you’ll love. Mana, as a local, speaks little French and English but we enjoyed talking in all possible ways. Therefore we loved eating in the kitchen with the company of Sabina and Mana altogether to talk about our adventures on the island and get their suggestions on further exploration. Breakfast always contains coffee, milk & butter, breadrolls, fresh seasonal fruit (papayas), cheese and tomatoes. On top of this Mana will make fresh juice, coconut or papaya marmalade and eggs in all possible ways (you only have to tell her what you wish for) or tortilla de patatas with leftovers from your dinner. So at the Torre nothing is ever thrown away. Every leftover will be used. In the evenings Mana will almost always prepare some garlic bread (amazing!) with a vegetable salad as a starter. Next up there will be a main course of fish or meat (again, amazing!) with vegetables, lentils, chips and/or rice, potatoes or else. And of course there will be an amazing dessert as well. We had everything from homemade crepes to ice-cream, fresh fruit and cake! We never wanted to eat anywhere else. And don’t forget to ask for the homemade Coconut Rum - it’s delicious.
As for the activities around the island there are countless beautiful beaches in walkable distance from the Torre as well as the upfront beach 5 meters away. Keep in mind though, that the sun is strong and you have to wear a hat and strong sunscreen during the days if you’re a regular Europan tourist. We also took some neoprene shoes with us for swimming because there are rocks at the beaches which can be covered in urchins or sea slugs. Nonetheless all animals on the island are very friendly and if you don’t harm them, they won’t harm you. Often, donkeys will come to the gates of the Torre where Sabina offers them water and sometimes corn.
Other than that it is also possible to rent a car in Vila. Sabina suggested Auto Maio to us. We rented a car and drove all around the island on the cobblestone streets, which is a good idea if you want get to know the island a bit better. In Vila there are some souvenir shops and of course supermarkets if you are in need of anything. Other than by your own rental car, it is possible to comfortably get to and from Calheta to Vila by Aluguer.
Some additional Information on the accommodation of the Tower as well:
You reach the front porch of the tower through some steps in front with a small gate at the top. The porch is prepared with a seating area and some clotheslines to hang your wet towels or bathing suits. On the right of the porch a smaller tower is located which contains the bathroom. It’s a regular bathroom with a shower, sink and toilet. However, Maio is an island where water is extremely rare and you should try to save as much of it as you can.
On the first floor of the tower you will find an entrance area, cabinets and a fridge. Sabina also prepares towels for visitors. The fridge is filled will beverages. All prices are listed within. On the second floor you’ll find a small library of diverse literature and a second seating area. The highlight is the bedroom in the third floor. The rounded bed overlooks the palm trees of the garden and you can see the ocean almost without even sitting up in bed. Wifi is not available in the tower but in front of the main buildings and the breakfast area in front of the kitchen, which is fine!

A quirky accommodation option in the sleepy ocean-facing village of Calheta
Tastefully and thoughtfully designed and decorated though, and run by a delightful German lady called Sabine. It offers lodging in two villas: its 'tower' (think stylised lighthouse living) or 'chapel'.
Since there are so few reviews and so little information about Torre Sabina online, I've decided to write a lengthy review with as much information as I can to give people a better overview of the place.
My partner and I chose the tower to stay in for the uniqueness of it all, and of course the top two floors offer great views. With so few beds (only two to a villa) service is very personal, and since we were the only ones there during our stay we had the run of the place, as it were. The tower has a 'kitchen' on the ground floor, albeit one where the only thing you're likely to use is the fridge - which is well-stocked with water as well as juice, beers, etc., charged separately but for very reasonable prices (especially considering accommodation only costs €30 per person per night).
Breakfast (and dinner if you take it - good value at €13 per person for three courses of simple but tasty home-cooked and prepared starters, mains and afters, with homemade garlic bread) is served anywhere you want it, really: in the kitchen, on the terrace, at the table under the trees, in your own villa or on your villa's terrace/veranda. We took dinner on our terrace as the corner of the tower it's situated in is protected from the [persistent] winds. Breakfast we enjoyed on the terrace.
The second floor has a table and chairs and a well-stocked 'library' in German, French and English (possibly more) as well as chess and backgammon sets. There is also a small balcony with a view over the beach and water. The only thing missing here, in my opinion, since there's room for one, is a settee or sofa or at least an armchair, since we spent all our time indoors using the bed as a lounge.
The top floor has a queen-sized bed (ingeniously rounded at one end to fit the curve of the wall/stairs/railing) plus storage space and shelves. The bed is perfectly comfortable, but a word of advice for anyone who's a light sleeper: close the wooden shutters on the windows to keep out the light and the gustiest of breezes (leaving them open on the lower floors to allow the air to circulate) and take the blankets out of the duvet covers or you'll be in for a hot, sleepless night. If you need to recharge devices, there are power points on the 'main' wall and one under the 'bedside table' with a lamp otherwise plugged in.
The bathroom is in a separate bit of the tower on the ground floor with a sink and mirror, large shower 'cubicle' (no doors or shower curtain) with hand-held shower, and a toilet. Guests are encouraged to keep water consumption to a minimum, and given how dry the country is, we respected this. (We also used the bottled water offered when brushing our teeth; otherwise no health concerns, with not a mosquito to speak of and only the occasional medium-sized to large but generally harmless spider to occasionally catch you by surprise.)
Storage-wise there isn't really anywhere to hang anything, so you might want to bear this in mind. Also, while Sabine speaks excellent English and of course her native German (plus French and Portuguese, and the local Creole), her assistant in all thinks cooking and cleaning, Mana, only speaks Creole, Portuguese and some French. Where breakfast and dinner are concerned you'll mostly deal with Mana, so be prepared to use gestures and/or whatever basic French and/or Portuguese you know. (She's lovely, and also very modest given the quality of her cooking.)
The main door of the tower and the screen door accompanying it (all of the doors and windows have screens, incidentally) can be locked, but honestly there's no need to. However, there's no safe or similar for valuables, passports, etc. so you may still want to lock the door if you head out, just in case.
Sabine can arrange for you to be met at the tiny airport on arrival (the taxi ride from the airport to Torre Sabina being charged at a flat rate of 1000$/€10) and have you taken back there for the same price when you leave. Otherwise, if you don't have your own transport, you'll have to get around the island under your own steam using the local 'minibuses' (irregular and unpredictable, mostly earlier a.m. and later p.m., but costing just 100$/€1 to get to or from Vila do Maio, the small town that is the island's capital, compared to 1000$/€10 in a taxi). Or on foot. Cycling is an option, but none of the roads on the island are sealed - they're all cobblestones, and uncomfortable enough in a car, so ride at your own risk (of major discomfort during and after).
Torre Sabina has very sweet old pets: two dogs and two cats, plus a duck. All well-behaved, most enjoying attention. Anyone with allergies should bear this in mind, as well as the fact that the island itself is full of randomly wandering animals (including the donkeys that turn up at the gates in search of water), none of which are a danger unless, again, you have some sort of allergy to them, although out on the streets and in the surrounding areas they're easier to avoid of course. The only mild concern is that some of the dogs around the village can be a little bit off-putting, barking at you and following you while you walk. We had one bother us for around 5 minutes in the village, but simply kept a slow and steady pace, remained relaxed and ignored it till it got finally bored and slouched off.
Breakfast each day was more or less the same: warm (white) bread rolls, some kind of jam (we were served both banana jam and coconut jam, and both were amazing), freshly sliced cheese and tomato, fresh fruit (whatever's available - we got papaya), juice (ditto - we got hibiscus juice, which is tart but quite nice) and your choice of tea or coffee. (On our last morning Mana also surprised us with a freshly baked caked.) All very filling and included in the price. Just let them know what time you want it - anything reasonable will be happily accommodated.
If you want dinner, let Mana or Sabine know in the morning (if they don't ask). They are always three courses, with a simple salad of sorts as a starter, followed by a hot main with sides - generally fish or chicken with potatoes and other vegetables or a sauce and polenta - and a dessert, which can be anything from local cheese with caramelised papaya to delicious homemade ice cream or simply slices of juicy orange. Leftovers don't go to waste - one morning our normal breakfast spread was added to by Mana with a fritata using some of the vegetables from the previous night's dinner, for example.
Drinks are offered but not always included in the price. Wine, for example, is charged separately and is comparatively expensive, but is local and rather nice. Otherwise, beer, water and juice are available from the fridge (paid separately), or if you have your own drinks you can always drink them. Sabine also very kindly offered us on a couple of occasions her homemade coconut tipple, which is basically rum blitzed with fresh coconut and is very nice. (On another occasion she took a ripe coconut straight from one of the many coconut trees, cleaved it open and shared the fresh coconut with us. Lovely!)
The beach in front of the complex is safe for swimming and indeed considered the best on the whole island in that respect. Just head a little beyond the fishing boats to find the sandiest spot to head into the water. (You may want to wear something on your feet in the water to avoid sharp shells, urchins, etc. all the same.) Don't be surprised to see the roaming animals make their way from the street down to the beach, where you can encounter cows, chickens, pigs, goats and more. Again, perfectly harmless in our experience.
WiFi is available in the complex though is strongest close to Sabine's own house and more or less on the [breakfast] terrace. However, it doesn't stretch to the tower, which is a drawback if it's really hot and/or windy and/or there's a lot of glare outside. Also, be prepared for the fact that there may be no WiFi at all, or indeed any power at all - outages are not unknown (it seems - no one was surprised or concerned about there being no power for almost a whole day while we were there, but that's very much the Cabo Verdean approach to life: no stress!).
Walks along the beach in both directions are great, particularly if you like beachcombing. We collected some very beautiful shells, [long-dead] starfish and coral et al. that had been washed up and had no problem getting them out of the country or into Europe, although some countries will be more strict about such things if you fancy trying to 'export' them yourself. Be sure to explore the coastline to the north of the complex for beautiful, lonely beaches and amazing 'shell graveyards'.

Wellness
Wir haben Torre Sabina besucht, weil uns die Lage und die außergewöhnliche Architektur besonders ansprachen. Dass wir uns damit eine Woche absolutes Wellnessprogramm gönnten, das hatten wir so nicht erwartet!
Umgeben von freundlichen Menschen, verwöhnt mit abwechslungsreichen köstlichen Mahlzeiten, ein Strand für uns alleine .... wir sind begeistert!
Ein großes Dankeschön an Sabina und Elida, die uns den Aufenthalt zu einem unvergesslichen Erlebnis werden ließen!

"Location suggestiva"
Impatto davvero positivo, un angolo segreto, circondato da poche abitazioni e con una splendida vista mare, di sera ti addormenti cullato dal suono delle onde.
