Perfect! We Wish We Could Have Stayed Longer!
We had an amazing time at Chateau Ladausse, and our only regret that was we didn’t stay longer than two nights. The manor house is like something out of a magazine, beautifully decorated, updated and charming. We stayed in the Ladausse Suite, which is very large and bright — our favorite suite in the house. This is one case where the room turned out to be even better than the pictures! Diane and Eric were wonderful and friendly hosts, and our favorite moment was a cooking class for my husband and me in the well appointed professional kitchen, followed by a fun dinner with the best conversation with our hosts and Diane’s cousin and her boyfriend. We loved wandering around the property, and the location is great for seeing the towns of the nearby Dordogne Valley. A walk through the quiet town of Montferrand-du-Perigord was one of our best memories of a two-week trip to France. We can’t recommend Chateau Ladausse highly enough.

Frugal
The host Eric-pick us up from the airport included in the price and we was welcomed to this lovely spacious chateaux.
The meal on the first day by Diane was lovely however over priced- 3 courses for €45.00 as it did not include any alcohol was expensive.
We found that when we bought food in such as bread, cheese and wine from the local shop for the group for the evening to the chateaux because they only offered bed and breakfast. The storage of the fridge was scrutinised by both Diane and Eric in turn as they both sneakingly inspected what we had bought from the local supermarket. They tried to charge corkage because they wanted us to buy their over priced wine.
Eric mentioned a figure of €100 euros for two opened bottles of wine and beer - this however came to a amicable conclusion and we ended up paying €50 for two bottles of wine and 4 bottles of beers.
It appear absurd that each time we went to the fridge or mate our own snacks we were being observed..
Breakfast consist of one caraf of water, one croissant each, a dap of jam and a piece of fruit. Coffee was provided but it was an effort to ask for a refill.
On one occasion we gave a croissant to the baby of the group to find later, that one adult who went on a run before breakfast had to do without because they said they didn’t have any more croissants.
I write this with a heavy heart, but I do not recommend this place at all.
Both Eric and Diane seemed to be in the business to squeeze as much money out of you as they could.
We was lucky that we had a car to go to the supermarket otherwise we would have been sitting ducks and reliant on their expensive provisions.
Whilst we were there we felt as though they were doing us a favour to be there, not that we were paying guests.
This is a shame because friends have told me that the other chateauxs they had stayed in were both welcoming friendly and plentiful, typical French.
Sadly , We seemed to have drawn the short straw booking this place. Walla! Eric there is plenty of room for improvement.

However, let us first say that the core problem we all faced is the fact that your daughter rented 5 rooms as a B&B but what you really needed instead was a vacation home by owner (a “gîte”)! Unfortunately you had not realized this point until the tail end of your stay, with a lot of confusion and stress for all involved. Your family acted as though you had free reins to the property (our home) which is not normal behavior for B&B guests.
Let us address each of your specific points:
1. Pick up at the airport is not included in the room rate.
2. Menu pricing: your daughter selected and confirmed the menu with us for your group of 9. She chose the beef option that carried a supplement. It included a glass of wine with the apéritif plus “amuses bouches” (appetizers), along with the 3 courses. I sent her a less expensive menu to consider at 35€ but she opted for the higher priced menu. The dinner on your arrival night had been well received by all and you specifically following the meal, and again the next day, with great compliments and appreciation. So, why now make a complaint like this? Were you being disingenuous at the time?
3. Bringing in loads of food & beverages to a B&B : this is not normal behavior!! It was not just a few baguettes, cheese and a couple bottles of wine. Your future son-in-law (Sam), asked after arrival night dinner if there was a tiny spot in our fridge for his syringe (for teeth whitening), to which we said “yes, of course”. At the same moment I asked if he needed to put baby formula in the fridge as there was a baby involved. All is fine up to this point. What is not fine is the next morning after breakfast when we witness loads and loads of groceries being offloaded into the house by two of the guests who took the liberty to fill most of our 500 liter fridge with food and drink. This time there was no respect shown to even ask if this would be OK. We found ourselves in a very awkward situation, so we suggested a solution where we moved our food/drinks to the bottom 2 shelves and let you have the remaining 5 shelves of the fridge. However, we still needed access to our own fridge so what you perceived as “inspecting” your activity was, in fact, us using our own fridge!!
4. Cork fee / plate fee (call it what you like): Being a B&B guest does not entitle you to use the property as your private residence for the weekend. When you bring in your own groceries and drinks, you create a need for glasses, plates, and silverware, which we then provided for your group. This naturally creates a bunch of dirty dishes which we washed up for you without complaint. All of that at 50€ for an entire weekend is quite a bargain!
5. Wine list pricing: Our wine list pricing starts at 20€/bottle. This cannot be considered overpriced. Our aged wines that we stock in our cellar for years are priced at 45€. This is not considered overpriced either.
6. Breakfast: As for the croissant that was short the 1st breakfast - yes we made a mistake by ordering croissants only for the adults because we didn’t realize the little baby could eat one! We corrected the problem for the next days, with full apology given at the time for which I thought had been accepted (apparently not). As for stinginess on butter and confiture - please know that in our effort to reduce food waste we prefer to bring out quantities that we think guests will eat, and are very happy to refill as much as you like – even if it takes more of our own time and effort (again, we are happy to do that). The other alternative is to put it all out at once, but given different people’s preferences, more ends up in the trash this way. The hours of time I spend preparing confiture to see it just get thrown away breaks my heart. I’m sorry if we could not keep everything replenished to your liking and it is unfortunate that you did not speak up at the time!
7. Other odd things: Then there was a wine tasting event that your daughter scheduled on Saturday but only confirmed with us only the night before – when is it OK to schedule events at a B&B without confirming the details with the owners? Even the sommelier who came here told me it was a ball of confusion surrounding that event.
The lack of respect you showed us in our home is what we remember from your stay. Normal checkout is at 11am. Around noon the luggage starts to come down. Then you proceeded to have an afternoon lunch party on the terrace, even with musicians stopping in to join. And then the new guests arrived (also attending your daughter’s wedding) and they joined the party! This continued for hours until around 3:30-4pm when your daughter’s wedding venue was available, leaving behind your loads of trash and garbage for us to deal with. I am still finding broken glass to this day on the pavement…Again, there was no discussion on your part to ask if it would be possible to have a late check-out – you just did it.
I regret that it rained all day Saturday and Sunday while you stayed with us. Surely this did not help the situation.
Conclusion: A B&B (chamber d’hôte) is just that - bed and breakfast. It does not include you bringing in your own groceries and drinks for a weekend of pre-wedding partying. Nearby restaurants normally take care of what to have for dinner while staying at a B&B!!
You should have rented a guest home, not a B&B, in order to have total privacy and ability to do as you like. We, too, wish that you had found a different chateau to stay at, as that weekend stands out as one of the most challenging weekends we ever experienced. It was pure insanity to be perfectly frank. So if we could rate you as a customer, we would give you a 1 star and title the review as “Disrespectful and Disingenuous Guest”!! We are really happy to welcome guests here – it is why we do what we do. But not when the casting is all wrong, and they leave here expressing satisfaction and then write a scathing review!
One final thought – the person who made this complaint is not the person who booked with us directly, organized everything for the family and paid the bill.
