The family-run Berghotel Wintersberg offers an idyllic and completely tranquil setting in the heart of a forest. Quietly situated beside the UNESCO-listed Limes Tower, this hotel in Bad Ems offers rooms with free Wi-Fi and a balcony.

Family business that invites you to "live with us"
After a short walk through the forest, you reach the relatively small but no less beautiful hotel. Forests and valleys line the property all around. Beautiful. After a brief greeting, our suitcases were carried upstairs so that we could feel like queens right from the start. As we later found out, the restaurant is currently only open on one Saturday a month: bingo! The meal consisted of an exquisite selection of delicacies in the form of three menus, with a choice of fish or vegetarian. The master of the house served us personally and joined us here and there for a few unobtrusive words. The desserts are worthy of a star!
The rooms are very clean and freshly renovated. Thanks to the furniture from the big Swede, women immediately feel at home .
Our room had a view of the forest, and the birds woke us up in the morning. Wonderful. The breakfast was delicious, fresh and lovingly prepared. Yes, the building is older. But anyone who gets upset about this hasn't understood it. The house lives and loves for and with its owners. We met the boss, the nice waiter in the evening and the lovely breakfast fairy. All of them are friendly, approachable and unobtrusive, so that you can simply enjoy your stay.

Needs to be revitalised
It is clear this hotel is past its prime - which is a shame for it has a lot to offer travellers!
The good things: The location, in a forest on a hill, is magical. The breakfast is excellent, everything you could ask for (almost, some more veggies would have been nice), served at the table, fresh and hot. The bathroom is really nice, great showers. Parking close by. Great service with tea/coffee and soft drinks in the foyer. Lots of channels on the sat-receiver. Wifi free, but on the slow side.
Some minuses: The road, up a hill in a forest, will not suit all. No ventilation in the room, and no nets to stop insects... so either hot and stuffy or feed the mozzies. In fact ventilation all around seems to be an issue, the hotel smells damp and moldy. The garden could use some care, there is a point where "natural style" becomes unkept.
If you enjoy old charm, quiet surroundings, being surrounded by nature and pleasant, attentive service, give this place a try.

Falling well short of the good reviews on Tripadvisor
Hotel Wintersberg is located in a forest on a mountain above Bad Ems. During the summer the beautiful view is attracting many visitors. Our stay was at the beginning of April and it rained already for some days.
We expected a homely country inn, but we were disappointed.
The room was newly renovated, comfortably furnished and clean. We missed the small extras that make a stay memorable. The traditional complementary bottle of mineral water or a kettle was missing. The lamp on the desk was burned out. Internet was patchy and did at times not work at all, which is probably not the fault of the hotel, as this often happens in remote places.
In the bathroom the same image. There was no soap or toiletries and we had ti ask for it. The toilet paper was extremely sparse. The handle of the toilet bush was broken. In the shower stall was no soap holder. The bathroom window is without shutter or curtain, so that the view from the building next door is free.There was a penetrate stench from the gutter.
Breakfast is served at the table and is of good quality and plentiful.
The food was definitely not what we expected and in no way considered as appropriate gastronomy of a reputed tourist hotel. The wild consommé came with three lonely ravioli floating in a too salty broth at for the price of € 7.50. The venison goulash was overcooked, microwaved and heated up, the band noodles fried instead of freshly boiled; and finally, the “wirsing” a kind of cabbage warmed up and having with a sour taste, probably prepared already a couple of days ago. The chef must have had an extra bad day. The restaurant is closed every Monday and Tuesday.
In spite that the hotel was empty, we were not given a room with a better view. The small attention to details and making feel customers happy is nonexistent in this hotel.

Yes, recommended
If you travel with a car it is easy to reach this hotel up on a hill in the southern part of Bad Ems. The Gehrman family has owned this quiet hotel in the woods for generations. Recently the bathrooms have been renovated. Rooms do have all you need, beds are fine, free wifi (though a bit slow a I am used to glass fiber connections). The really fine thing, however, is their kitchen. An excellent choice on the menu, good wines and beers. The boss and his wife are very flexible if you want to change the menu a bit, and definitely it is excellent for vegetarians too. Also an excellent breakfast. There is no elevator and there are no ground floor rooms. So not fit for disabled people. When the weather is fine you can have breakfast, lunch or dinner on the terrace overlooking Bad Ems.

Great views and restaurant
The hotel is situated high on a hill overlooking Bad Ems. Some rooms, as well as the restaurant and terrace, have the same view. The rooms are a good value... and the restaurant (and breakfast) is great. You won't want to go anywhere else to eat while staying here. The staff is also friendly. Overall this is a great place to stay. Note that the hotel has specific directions on the location and it is a little difficult to find w/o those directions.
