The most amazing trip!

A friend and I recently returned from a 4-night 5-day stay at Wisma Cinta Alam B&B, Katembe, owned and run by a local family. We had an amazing time and were well looked after, which was great for two older women travelling together. The guesthouse was lovely, and the extended family was warm and welcoming and very happy to share the produce from their plantation. The coffee was great, and the durian an acquired taste. We had an air-conditioned room set in a beautiful garden the two nights we stayed at the guesthouse. The other nights, we camped in the forest, on the banks of a stunning river, where we swam a lot and met travellers from other guesthouses in Ketambe. From there, we did treks into the forest each day. Our porter prepared the most wonderful food and local fruit for us, all beautifully presented, and endless amounts of delicious coffee and condensed milk. Romy and his cousin were excellent guides, very knowledgeable about the wildlife and plants. Five orangutans were seen near the campsite over the 3 days we were there: one young male, a mother and her baby, and an alpha male with a female. We saw most of them and shared videos with the other people from the campsite.
Romy was very responsive on WhatsApp and very helpful when we were planning our trip. He arranged our private airport (Medan) pick up and drop off (a 7-10 hour journey, depending on traffic), which included a lunch stop along the way. Romy is passionate about protecting and conserving the forest; he is a ranger with support and training from a global NGO and highly regarded by the broader family, who share his values, instilled by his grandfather and father, Johan. You can also find him (as Romi van de Van) and Wisma Cinta Alam on FaceBook and Instagram.

Amazing lodge on the edge of the rainforest & orangutans!

We arrived at Wisma Cinta Alam to do a three day / two night trek into the jungle to see the Orangutans in Ketambe.
Firstly the lodge in Ketambe is extremely cute and rustic. The accommodation is basic and the proximity to the jungle is very apparent with a lot of insects around. This didn't really bother us as we were expecting this anyway - you don't go trekking in the jungle without encountering creepy crawlies! Our shower head did have a load of ants living in it mind - this did persuade us to have a bucket shower instead! A little more attention on the lodges wouldn't be amiss but I'm not going to reduce the review because of this alone.
The hotel grounds are lovely, with open views of the hills and rainforest beyond and we were able to take a little stroll down to the banks of the Awas river.
The food in the lodge is extremely tasty. We enjoyed the curries on offer in particular and the breakfast pancakes were also really good.
Of course the jungle trekking was the main reason for our visit and did not disappoint. Our guide Tommy was excellent and was constantly finding us interesting things to see in the jungle. On our first morning walk we came across a female orangutan and her baby within the first hour. She was quite far away and in deep foliage though so we didn't get a great view. We carried on though and then after about another hour we came across a large male but not the alpha and we had a much better view and were able to see sim quite clearly along with other animals in the jungle like the giant squirrel. From there we made our way to camp and were able to drop off some of our stuff and have lunch.
That afternoon we took another hike and had an amazing encounter with another female orangutan and her baby. She seemed to be quite comfortable with us being around and we followed her around for probably about 30 minutes as she made her way around finding things to eat. After that excitement we continued further up the hill and came across some Thomas Leaf Monkey albeit at a bit of a distance and then spotted a flying lemur (or Colugo) gripping tight to a tree. This nocturnal animal was clearly a strict believer in "if i don't move, you can't see me" and just stayed motionless on the tree as we walked around and admired it :)
Returning to the camp we were greeted with an amazing meal prepared by Dawood on an open fire and wok - the food he was able to prepare with so little was an amazement for the whole visit.
The following day continued with more and more amazing Orangutan experiences. At one point, my wife, Tommy, and I were alone in the jungle with five Orangutan's around us including the resident alpha male. Absolutely humbling experience.
On our final day we had a closer encounter the the Thomas Leaf Monkeys and the omnipresent long-tailed Macaques and then as we were getting ready to leave the camp, the alpha male Orangutan and another female passed right by the camp! Almost as if to say goodbye (hah).
We heard gibbons a couple of times on the trip but weren't able to spot them - just hearing their calls though was amazing. Throughout the hikes we spotted a myriad of smaller critters including giant spiders, pill bugs (or Robo-beetle if you like), flying lizards, and a scorpion. Apparently we should have seen a snake too but we were both too preoccupied watching the Orangutan at the time! We also had a fairly nasty experience with a troop of fire ants - we both got bitten by these and they do hurt so watch out for them!
The campsite was a bathing spot on the river a short distance from where our tent was pitched. This was a blessing. Hiking in the jungle is seriously hot and humid. There's very little breeze and you are climbing up and down a lot. I was carrying around some fairly heavy camera equipment and I don't cope well in humid environments so I was sweating a lot! The river was just what I needed after the hikes.
Overnight in the tents it did get quite sticky and I did find I was better off sleeping with my head by the flap and the flap a little open.
Throughout the whole trip Tommy was an excellent guide and able to tell us all about the animals, the plants, and help us out providing sticks and fans.
Overall, I could not recommend highly enough.

Orangutans up close

We spend 2 days in Ketambe forest looking for orangutans and it didn’t disappoint!
Johan pick us up at Medan airport and took us to his guesthouse, best bed ever.
The next morning we went out to the jungle with Iful.
He was amazing with us, took us to explore and we saw 4 orangutans, 2 of them with babies!
The food in the camp was very yummy. Simple but very tasty.
Iful new lots about the jungle and the creatures living in it. We came in the wet season so it rain a lot but we expected it.
We definitively recommend this tour.
