Traditional and homely

Accommodation in Panauti seems limited and in an effort to avoid the obviously named hotel, we wandered around the old town in the hope of finding somewhere more traditional and homely. Giving up we went to a cafe for tea and barra and while there asked the server if he had any suggestions.
He pointed across the road saying "best in Panauti" then called out and spoke with the manager. Within moments, cost negotiated and room booked.
Matan Chhen is in a quiet street - for both traffic and dogs - and is a traditionally built Newar house. Each upper floor has one large bedroom suite (at least the two I looked at did) with a separate bedroom, sitting room and kitchen area. With low ceilings, lots of carved wood and pillars it is very traditional and quirky - a point explained with lost of information cards around the room - but be careful on the narrow stairs. If you want to stay in an identikit concrete box, this is not the place for you...but why would you?
It's an old building but well preserved and the bathroom functioned well, includiung lots of hot water (it was a sunny winter day and we were the only guests). The free wifi worked well.
We did not have breakfast because we went back to the cafe acrooss the road for the best barra I had in the valley this trip.
It was very good value; only marginally more expensive than the big hotel in town.

Highly recommended

We arrive there after a trekking from Namo Buddha, and it was beautiful discovering Panauti and this little gem Matan Chen. Location is perfect and the building is really characteristic and nice, with all the comforts.
Staff as well was really helpful and amazing.
We had a really good breakfast and dinner with traditional food.
Highly recommended!

Beautiful

We had such a wonderful stay here! The family running the homestay was so kind and flexible and we had a great time doing the trek they organized for us to Namo Buddha with Sarita. She was so helpful, knowledgeable and fun along the way! Such an interesting area to explore!

This must be on your list of places to stay!

We spent 4 nights at Matan Chhen. We had an absolute incredible time here. Run by an Australian - Bec and her daughter Nimu, you are guaranteed an absolute amazing time, and only about 2.5hrs from Kathmandu. Matan Chhen is a UNESCO finalist restored building, and everything inside is so wonderfully furnished and comfortable with your own living room, bathroom, kitchenette and comfortable bed. Food is absolutely to die for, and you can help prepare your dinner too by going to the local market and help selecting the vegetables, oh, and the roof top area, 360' views over the village is so very special - a great place to have a Nepalese beer and watch the sun go down. We did a hike (a must do!!!) to the Monastery where Buddha is said to have been eaten by a Tiger (Namobuddha), we explored the village of Panauti, spending time in the local schools, watching the ducks go home at the end of the day, walking around the temples and just relaxing. We would stay here again in a heartbeat, and plan to again. If you can time your stay with a festival - it is a must.
