Perfect stay!

Wonderful hotel! Our room had a balcony with an amazing view overlooking the town of Grindelwald and of the mountains. Very clean and comfortable room.
Perfect location, although the walk up to the hotel was a bit of a climb. But so worth it!!
Breakfast each morning was delicious and the dining room had great views!
Wish we could have stayed longer than 2 nights.

Hotel Sonnenberg, Grindelwald.

A very charming hotel, located close to the train station, with an astonishing view of the Eiger. The staff were very helpful and polite. My stay was during the off-season, so I really appreciated the peaceful atmosphere of the town. If you want an escape from the city rush, and want to enjoy some quality time, recharging your energies, this is the place. I couldn’t recommend the Hotel Sonnenberg enough.

The price-performance ratio is not right in my opinion. Never again.

Hotel Sonnenberg is located a little above in the village of Grindelwald with good views of the Eiger and wider mountains. (Inexpensive rooms at the back do not have this mountain view.)
The staff is friendly but not German speaking. Breakfast is good to very good as a buffet.Many guests are, as mostly in Grindelwald, from Asia.
Space in the bathroom is insufficient and there was only one storage space. There is only sparse lighting on the tape mirror. Not suitable for elderly, and obese people. The shower only with curtain separated from the toilet immediately afterwards. Towels to dry are to be hung above the toilet. That the window and the other windows are very difficult to open. For the summer there is no air conditioning and no mosquito nets for ventilation at night.
Overall, the room is sparse and unlovingly decorated to my perception.
The ravages of time are eating away at the furniture. There is no bedside lighting. The cabinets do not have a safe and can only be closed when it is locked, otherwise the doors are open.
The mattresses and the blackout curtain seem to be new only.
A small coffee machine with four coffee pads is on the table.
The room makes a very uncomfortable impression overall, for me more of a youth hostel.
We stayed two nights on site, it was just the beds made and the towels straightened by the room service.
The rooms are very noisy, we heard conversations and phone calls from other guests, both in the corridor and in the room itself.
From Grindelwald station, the hotel can be reached on foot in about ten minutes uphill, under normal conditions.
Those arriving by car must park a little below the hotel and then walk up the mountain for about 200 meters.
My conclusion the hotel is in my opinion overpriced for this price, the price-performance ratio is not right.
And fair would be to describe the less comfortable rooms neatly and fairly.
With a photo e.g. of this said room, we would not have booked this hotel.

It’s located 10 minutes from the station. The view from the room is superb. And there are coffee capsules and candies inside the room. The owner and staff there are very nice and helpful. They always offer me coffee whenever I show up. The breakfast tastes good especially the omelette.

Disappointing.

The first thing you should be aware of is that this hotel is halfway up a big hill and the only access is by zigzag footpaths, so you have to drag your bags up behind you. We were told that it is close to the railway station and it is: but it's a steep climb to get there. They have a small hotel car park about halfway to the hotel alongside the footpath, but you can't drive to the door to unload your luggage. Unless you are young and fit (and some of the guests we saw certainly weren't that!) you should consider choosing somewhere nearer the main street.
We were given a room at the back with no view and this was disappointing. The room itself was OK though rather basic. A friend made the booking so I don't know what she booked, but we weren't happy though we didn't say so at the time.
We choose to shower in the evenings and ran the tap for ages, but eventually had to have cold showers because the hot water never came through. We were at the top of the building, which might have had something to do with it.
We enjoy pre-dinner drinks and they have a bar with an honesty system to pay for the drinks on checkout. The price list showed several wines as well as beer (of which there was plenty), but the only wine available was a bottle of fizz with about 6 cms. of wine left in the bottom; the rest on offer was beer or soft drinks of various kinds. At, I think from memory, about twelve Euros a glass I wasn't going to pay that and risk that the wine was flat!
Breakfast was OK, but the service was very slow. We ordered coffee when we first sat down, but it still hadn't arrived when we were finished so we went elsewhere for our shots of caffeine. We had been told we could order eggs to be cooked as we wished, but no-one ever came to take an order.
If we ever returned to this beautiful village we would stay somewhere else.
