Crystal Brook Riley | The perfect hotel for those looking to relax in Cairns
The first thing that impressed me upon arrival was the large lagoon pool in the middle of the hotel. It has a sense of openness, but a slightly different laid-back atmosphere than hotels in the city.
The view of the pool and the hotel tower from the veranda of the guest rooms was also fascinating, as the expression of the view changed day and night.
Day and night views from your room are impressive
Rooms are bright, simple and calm. When you step out onto the veranda, the pool and hotel building spread out in front of you.
During the day, the sun-drenched surface of the water glitters, and at night, the lit pool feels calm.
It was nice to come back from sightseeing and take a break from the view on my veranda.
In the morning, natural light entered the room and we were able to have a very bright morning, typical of Cairns.
Feel like a resort in the large lagoon pool
The lagoon pool, measuring over 1,000 m2, is the most prominent of the hotel.
During the day, the blue water surface and palm trees create a resort-like atmosphere, and at night, they are illuminated to give a different impression.
It was a space that made us want to not only swim but also spend some time relaxing by the pool.
For trips packed with sightseeing and activities, it is nice to be able to relax in these places after returning to your hotel.
Rooms that make you feel close to eco-friendly
What I noticed during my stay was that the environmental considerations were incorporated into various parts of the hotel.
In the cabin, paper hangers, wooden room keys and refillable dispensers are used.
It was also convenient to have a system where water can be replenished from the facility's water supply facility rather than having to provide several bottles of water.
Disposable items tend to increase when you’re traveling, so it’s nice to be exposed to these initiatives just by staying overnight.
Convenient for a walk along the Esplanade
The hotel is conveniently located on the Esplanade, for those who want to enjoy walking around the area.
It also looks good for walking or running by the sea in the cool of the morning.
The hotel also offers free bicycle rental, which can be used for up to four hours.
Cairns is not only a sightseeing tour, but also a fun time to walk along the sea and take a leisurely stroll around the city, so I thought it was fascinating to be based around the hotel.

The Asian-inspired restaurant offers terrace seating where you can dine while feeling the morning light.
What I was looking forward to was the food they would make after ordering. The omelette was also finished right in front of me, so I could taste it freshly made.
It was also good to have breakfast at the hotel before going sightseeing, so it was easy to plan your morning.
What I felt when I stayed there
I felt Crystal Brook Riley was better suited to people who also wanted to enjoy spending time in a hotel than just sleeping in it for sightseeing.
The view of the pool from the veranda of the guest rooms and the quiet atmosphere at night were particularly impressive.
It is located on the Esplanade, so it is easy to walk around the city, and you can spend your time in the hotel. I think this is a great hotel for a trip to Cairns where you want to enjoy some activities and have a bit of luxury at the hotel.

Made it back like we hoped, would go again!
This was the second time my husband and I have stayed, we came late last year from NZ and thought it would be a good spot to bring our kids. We all really enjoyed our time at the Riley, we had the interconnecting family room with sea view and we were in the block facing along the Esplanade so had a nice view of the water and towards the marina. The rooms were very clean, comfortable, with blackout curtains which block the light very well. Kids enjoyed the buffet breakfast and pool - it was school holidays when we visited so finding a lounger could sometimes be a challenge however we did see signs asking guests to not reserve loungers with towels or unattended items would be removed (however I didn’t notice this actually occurring). It really is a nice place if you are wanting to lie on a lounger and take it easy, there is poolside service for food and drinks. In comparison to other hotels nearby, I think the size of the pool is good for the amount of rooms, it was busy but not shoulder to shoulder in the pool.
Staff were all very friendly, I really appreciate the employee who was able to retrieve my sunglasses after they had a mishap from the 4th floor balcony, especially as we were leaving early Monday morning and I wasn’t sure I would get them back in time as maintenance was not working at the time.
Location wise, the Riley is close to Muddy’s playground, the aquarium (highly recommend the night tour), Tomb of the Pharaohs, the marina is also an easy walk along the boardwalk if you are looking for somewhere to dine.
Overall, a really enjoyable stay for our family and I would go back again happily.

Beautiful property but mediocre service
The hotel was beautiful and the facilities clean and modern. However, the service and breakfast was mediocre; I had to ask for towels, toilet paper and tea bags to be replaced almost daily, as the housekeeping kept forgetting to replenish. The room temperature doesn’t stay stable and it gets hot in the night. We requested an early check-in and front office advised us that they would try to prioritise it and send us a message when it was ready. As we didn’t get a message we waited till check in time and checked on our room and they said it was ready earlier, but nobody informed us. It takes forever for anyone (operator; housekeeping or reception) to answer the phone. The standout though was the Eleme Spa. Exceptional service and amazing treatment and quality by staff.

There is nothing luxury or 5 star about this hotel. Rooms are dirty and if you stay in the tower, very very musty. The smoke detector went off in our room and the firefighter commented that it was due to cobwebs in the sprinkler sensor. While the breakfast is good and the views lovely, I would not recommend this hotel. Especially if you are expecting a true 5 star experience.

Overall, this is a decent hotel with some really good amenities, particularly the pool, which was excellent.
Unfortunately, we felt we got unlucky with the room we were allocated — Room 201, which is designed for wheelchair-accessible guests. I completely appreciate the importance of accessible rooms, and the bathroom is clearly very well designed for guests who require those facilities. However, being 6 ft 2, having almost everything positioned at a much lower level was uncomfortable and impractical.
There was also no storage or shelving in the bathroom for toiletries, meaning we had to keep them near the fridge area and walk back and forth to retrieve them. The roll-in shower was another issue, with water spreading across the bathroom and towards the room. We ended up having to sacrifice a towel to stop water entering the bedroom area.
Cleanliness was also disappointing. The room was quite dusty, and we found no less than 10 random long hairs on the bedding and lounge areas, seemingly left behind by previous guests.
The hotel itself has plenty going for it and the facilities are good. Unfortunately, our experience was let down by the layout and cleanliness of Room 201. Overall, it’s a decent hotel — we just unfortunately got unlucky with our room.
